ENNIS, Texas (March 5, 2013) – Texas Motorplex owner and Funny Car racing icon Billy Meyer will be the Grand Marshall at this weekend’s March Meet at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.

The legendary Bakersfield March Meet will be celebrating 55 years of quarter mile drag racing in 2013. Continuing with the successful 4 day program, Bakersfield will once again play host to some of the greatest drag racing in the world March 7-10, 2013.

Meyer, one of the all-time greats of Funny Car racing, retired from the cockpit more than 20 years ago, but continues to make an impact in drag racing as owner of the famous Texas Motorplex. Meyer said he was thrilled to get the call to be Grand Marshall for one of the season’s most popular events with fans and racers.

“The March Meet is one of the biggest events of the drag racing year and I’m honored I was asked to be the Grand Marshal,” Meyer said. “This event is special for old school racers and the young up-and-coming racers because it celebrates hot rods, speed and the grass roots of quarter-mile racing. I can’t wait to get the event started.”

Over 500 race entries are expected for this 4 day festival of speed that includes fun for the whole family. The March Meet attracts drag racers and spectators from around the world and also includes a hot rod car show, swap meet and a vendors’ midway.

“Here we go again! As always, we are proud to promote and host the world’s best nostalgia drag race. The March Meet is going to be bigger and more exciting than ever! It’s going to be four big days of non-stop quarter mile action” said Blake Bowser, vice president and general manager of the Kern County Racing Association, operators of Auto Club Famoso Raceway. “If you have never been to the March Meet you need to experience it in person. It is so much more than a drag race; it’s a gathering of drag racing legend’s, friends and family. Once you attend the March Meet you will understand why so many people return year after year.”

March Meet ticket sales and prices, as well as other race information, including downloadable entry forms will be posted soon at www.autoclubfamosoraceway.com

Texas Motorplex was the first all-concrete stadium-style drag racing facility ever constructed. Built in 1986, Texas Motorplex has been the place of many drag racing milestones and world record performances. The Billy Meyer-owned facility hosts a number of racing and car show events between March and November each year and also features the Champion’s Club – an 11,000 square-foot facility – that serves fully catered events throughout the year.
