Hight, Torrence, Butner and Krawiec Tops in Qualifying at AAA Texas FallNationals
DALLAS, Texas (October 14, 2017) – It was a hot day at the 32nd annual AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals but that didn’t slow down Robert Hight and Steve Torrence as they powered to the No. 1 qualifying positions in their respective nitro categories. Hight, driving the AAA Texas Chevrolet Camaro, grabbed the No. 1 spot on his last pass of qualifying running 3.871 seconds, a mere one one-thousandth of a second in front of points leader Ron Capps.
“That is a great run for these kinds of conditions. You have to take you hat off to these AAA Texas guys. It was a handful on that run. I was about to forget about Friday the 13th. The AAA Texas people were about to disown us. We turned things around today. Good job to the whole team. Great job guys,” said Hight from the top end.
Capps will head into race day as the No. 2 qualifier just ahead of teammate Jack Beckman. The Funny Car ladder has a number of big names in the bottom half of the field including John Force (No. 10), Matt Hagan (No. 13) and J.R. Todd (No. 14). With championship hopes up for grabs the cooler temperatures will keep all the crew chiefs on their toes.
Torrence was the quickest Top Fuel dragster all weekend and will head into race day in search of his first win at Texas Motoplex behind the wheel of the Capco Top Fuel dragster. The Mello Yello points leader posted the quickest run of the final qualifying session and will stand on the strength of his Friday best ET of 3.682 seconds. Right behind Torrence are two DSR dragsters, Tony Schumacher and Antron Brown, and then Doug Kalitta and Brittany Force.
The race for the Pro Stock Mello Yello championship is currently a battle between Greg Anderson, Bo Butner, Jason Line and Tanner Gray. All four of these drivers are at the top of the AAA Texas FallNationals qualifying order led by Bo Butner and his 6.588 second run at 208.94 mph. Butner is basically tied with Greg Anderson and his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro for the points lead and Anderson sits No. 4 in qualifying. Line and Gray sit in the No. 2 and No. 3 qualifier positions. Granbury’s Alex Laughlin will go into race day as the No. 7 qualifier and will race Odessa’s Chris McGaha in the first round.
Finally in Pro Stock Motorcycle Eddie Krawiec was the class of the field all weekend. As the points leader Krawiec is looking for his fourth Mello Yello Pro Stock Motorcycle championship and will go into race day as the No. 1 qualifier. Jerry Savoie, Andrew Hines and Scotty Pollacheck round out the top spots.
Final eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow morning.
