Texan Steve Torrence Tops at AAA Texas FallNationals
DALLAS, Texas (October 13, 2017) – The last pair of Top Fuel dragsters brought the Texas Motorplex fans to their feet as Steve Torrence and Tony Schumacher made the two quickest passes of the day with Kilgore’s Torrence grabbing the top spot with a 3.682 second run just in front of Schumacher’s 3.692 seconds. Both drivers lit up the scoreboard with 327 mph passes.
“I grew up racing here but I have never won here. We are going fast and earning points,” said Torrence from the top end after his stellar run.
Funny Car points leader Ron Capps blasted to the top of the flopper field with a 3.872 second pass at 329.58 mph a mere one one-thousandth quicker than teammate Jack Beckman’s 3.873 seconds at 332.34 mph. Two-time Top Alcohol Funny Car world champion and Funny Car rookie Jonnie Lindberg settled into the No. 3 provisional spot with a 3.873 second run at 328.14 mph.
As the track began to cool off Pro Stock was the first class to take advantage of the improved conditions. Bob Butner held onto the top spot but improved his ET with a 6.588 at 208.94 mph to add six points to his total as the quickest Pro Stock car of both sessions. Jason Line held onto the No. 2 spot with a quicker 6.626 second run and Erica Enders jumped up to the provisional No. 3 spot with a solid 6.634 second pass.
Pro Stock Motorcycle wrapped up Friday with Eddie Krawiec (6.860 sec.) and Jerry Savoie (6.873 sec.) finishing the day 1-2 and Scottie Pollacheck (6.900 sec.) moved up to the No. 3 spot in provisional qualifying.
First qualifying session was a marathon not a sprint as Cruz Pedregon and the Snap-on Toyota Camry had a mechanical failure that spilled oil on the starting line forcing a delay that lasted well over an hour. At the end of the session points leader and Kilgore’s Steve Torrence picked up three valuable qualifying bonus points as the quickest Top Fuel dragster with a run of 3.717 seconds at 320.74 mph. In Funny Car Jack Beckman was the quickest at 3.914 seconds while Courtney Force powered the Advance Auto Parts Chevrolet Camaro to a top speed of 331.94 mph.
Bo Butner led Pro Stock after the first session followed by the Summit Racing Equipment Camaros of Jason Line and Greg Anderson. Pro Stock Motorcycle points leader Eddie Krawiec was the quickest of the first session.
Qualifying for the Mello Yello Drag Racing Series will continue tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. and 4:15 p.m.
