Racer meets Nolan Ryan, C.J. Wilson
By Richard Durrett
ARLINGTON, Texas — Robert Hight, currently No. 2 in the NHRA Funny Car standings and already qualified for the Countdown to the Championship (drag racing’s playoff), visited Rangers Ballpark in Arlington on Sunday. He was in town for a media event to promote the NHRA Texas Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex in Ennis, Sept. 22-25.

Wilson and Hight talked for a while outside the Rangers clubhouse, sharing racing stories.

“I enjoy watching drag racing,” Wilson said. “Robert lives in Yorba Linda, Calif., so he’s 30 minutes away from me. I told him he should come drive a sports car and try something slow. He said the cars are 8,000 horsepower and I can’t even fathom that. They have 75 minutes to tear the engine down and rebuild it. Those crews must be amazing.”

Hight admits he’s a big Los Angeles Dodgers fan. But he has watched Wilson pitch for a few years and is impressed. And he was a fan of the Rangers during the club’s playoff run last season.

“I’m a die-hard Dodgers fan and the Ragners were playing the Giants last year and when you’re a Dodger fan, you don’t want the Giants to win,” Hight said. “I really wanted the Rangers to pull it off.”

Hight is a big fan of Nolan Ryan and was thrilled to meet the Rangers CEO and president prior to the game.

“The guy is a legend,” Hight said. “He did everything right and to last as long as he did as a pitcher, he was just a workhouse. Now he’s back in the organization as an owner. That’s what I want to do in drag racing. Long after I drive, I hope to be around the sport as a crew chief, owner, something.”

Hight currently sits behind teammate Mike Neff in the standings, but the title will be decided in the Countdown.

“You have to win events and be consistent,” Hight said. “Round wins are good, but you have to win some events to win the title. That’s what we’re going to try to do. It won’t be easy.”
