McBride to ride for Karl Klement/Rush Racing at the O’Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals
Pro Stock Motorcycle competitor Angie McBride will ride Karl Klement’s Buell at the O’Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals presented by Castrol Syntec.
McBride, fiancée of former world champion Matt Smith, has been competing sporadically on the tour this year aboard one of Smith’s bikes and hopes that the Dallas audition might lead to a more full-time role for 2010.
“I’m excited because this may be a stepping-stone to the future,” said McBride. “Hopefully it is.”
Smith built and mounted the engine in the bike that formerly was ridden by Peggy Llewellyn and Angelle Sampey.
“It’s going to be a challenge, but I am going to go to the track and ride Karl’s bike,” she said. “If I keep that focus, I think we will do well. You have to keep focused on the job at hand. It’s about getting the bike down the track. Thank you Karl and Kim Klement and Rush Racing for providing this opportunity.”
Although Klement, who parked his operation for this season due to business demands, still is undecided about 2010, he has been active this year in that he has provided some teams with engines to gauge the competitiveness of his parts.
“By the end of the year and January, I’ll know where I am at,” he said. “For Rush Racing and Doc’s Harley-Davidson, we’re really excited about getting out there again.”
Klement also is excited about having McBride on his team. “All she needs is a little opportunity and seat time,” he said. “She can win. She is very capable of being a winner.”

ENNIS, Texas (Sept. 10, 2009) – What else could you expect when prestige, Countdown positions and prize money are all on the line? The racing surface isn’t the only thing that will be heated over the next six races.
John Force and Tony Pedregon had a heated argument last weekend as the drama unfolded at the 55th annual Mac Tools U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. Tony and his brother, Cruz, both accused Force of cheating and manipulating race results to benefit John Force Racing’s four-car squad.
To say the least, Force didn’t appreciate being called a cheater. Force and Tony Pedregon battled it out during separate interviews during ESPN2′s coverage of the race before having a heated argument at the top end of the race track – just after Ashley Force Hood beat Tony Pedregon and Robert Hight beat Force. Hight’s win over his Ford teammate bumped Cruz Pedregon (the 2008 series champion) out of the coveted 10th place in the Countdown, ensuring Cruz Pedregon will not be in the playoffs for the final six events of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
Ashley Force Hood went on to claim her first U.S. Nationals title, becoming the first female to claim a Funny Car victory at the event.
Billy Meyer, owner of the Texas Motorplex and 1982 Funny Car winner at the U.S. Nationals, is pleased to see the racers’ personality showing their true competitive colors.
In fact, as the 24th annual O’Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals at the Texas Motorplex readies for the Sept. 24-27 stop, Meyer hopes to see the racer’s intensity heat up even more.
“I think it’s great to see such personality coming out,” Meyer said. “It shows how much passion they have for the sport. They are in fuel Funny Cars going 300 mph, and they should be fired up and passionate about what they do. No one wants a corporate bobble head in the cockpit of those cars. It’s about time we get to see their competitive personality.”
The Motorplex is one of the final six events of the 2009 season – which make up the Countdown to 1 playoff schedule. Only the top 10 racers in each of the four professional categories – Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle – will earn the right to compete for the 2009 NHRA championships. All professional racers had 18 events to battle their way into the top 10.
Meyer said having the U.S. Nationals as the final event for racers to bump into the top 10, therefore be eligible to race for the championship title, just set the stage for heated moments.
“I am one of the lucky drivers who can say they battled and won a U.S. Nationals title,” Meyer said. “I know what it takes to win that event. It’s
a marathon and everyone is throwing everything they have at the track to win. I don’t know a driver who would give up that trophy because you don’t just stumble upon a U.S. Nationals victory. You have to fight for it.
“I also know that every team has sponsors to answer to and everyone wants their team to be in the Countdown. Force Racing accomplished that goal and now have four cars in the Countdown.”
J.R. Todd earned the 2008 Top Fuel victory at the Motorplex while Tim Wilkerson is defending the Funny Car title, Greg Stanfield will be defending Pro Stock and Chris Rivas will defend the Pro Stock Motorcycle title.
Sportsman qualifying begins at 10 a.m. on Sept. 24. The first of four rounds of professional qualifying is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sept. 25, continuing at 4:45 p.m. that evening. Qualifying wraps up with sessions at 11:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 26. Final eliminations begin at 11 a.m. on Sept. 27.

O’FALLON, MO (Sep. 9, 2009) — It takes time for any sporting event to develop historic and sentimental importance for competitors and fans, but the National Guard American Drag Racing League’s (ADRL’s) annual Flowmaster Dragstock is well on its way to achieving legendary status. This year’s Flowmaster Dragstock VI takes over Rockingham (NC) Dragway Sep. 11-12, and with record-setting car counts and spectator attendance expected, it promises to expand the event’s reputation and prestige.
As the literal jumping off point for the National Guard ADRL in 2004, Dragstock has played a pivotal role in shaping the series and already has become the one race every racer wants to see his or her name written beside in the win column.
“Winning any ADRL race is like hitting a home run, but if I could win at Dragstock, that would be my grand slam,” 36-year Pro Nitrous veteran Charles Carpenter said. “Rockingham is my home track and we expect literally hundreds of our fans, friends and customers to show up, so it would just be such a huge accomplishment for us to win there.”
As the final points-earning opportunity toward the championship-deciding Speedtech Battle for the Belts, Dragstock also can play a huge role in a team’s assessment of its year. With only the top eight in points in each of the National Guard ADRL’s five professional classes getting to race each other for the 2009 world championships this October in Ennis, Texas, each point gained or missed at Dragstock carries added meaning for certain drivers and teams.
For instance, with 100 points granted for each round win and bonuses offered for qualifying well and setting records, Pro Extreme racer Jason Hamstra enters Flowmaster Dragstock VI just over one round behind Frankie Taylor in eighth place, while in Pro Nitrous, Pat Stoken is in a similar position behind Steve Vick.
The eight-car Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 Speedtech Battle for the Belts field is already set, though plenty of room remains for contenders to shuffle their starting positions for the Battle in Texas. Pro Extreme Motorcycle remains wide open, however, again with the opportunity for current Belts contenders to improve their position and with no less than five non-qualifiers well within striking distance to break into the field.
And just four points behind Dragstock V winner Cary Goforth in the final Extreme Pro Stock Belts position is Robert Patrick Jr., with Jeff Dobbins also less than two rounds from inclusion.
“It’s always a tough race,” said Bubba Stanton, winner of Flowmaster Dragstock V’s Pro Extreme event and currently seventh in points. “It’s a big race and I’d love to defend our title, but I’m going in there this year just trying to be consistent and making sure we stay in the top eight.”
Flowmaster Dragstock at Rockingham Dragway also is known for offering record-setting conditions and was the site of the National Guard ADRL’s first 200-mile-per-hour pass over the eighth mile when reigning two-time Pro Extreme champ Jason Scruggs turned the trick during qualifying in 2007 before eventually leaving with both official elapsed time and speed records.
Last year’s Flowmaster Dragstock V also produced memorable on-track results, highlighted by Billy Glidden running a then-record 4.14 in the Flowmaster Extreme 10.5 final and Andy Jensen upsetting the Pro Nitrous world by seizing the E.T. record in what turned out to be the swan song appearance for turbocharged entries in the class.
Additionally, the debut of Puerto Rico’s Raymond Matos and Qatar’s Khalid Al-Balooshi in the Pro Nitrous ranks gave the 2008 event an international flair, with Matos even scoring the surprise win to write himself a storybook ending.
The fans, too, arrived in force for Flowmaster Dragstock V, with some 31,000 passing through the Rockingham Dragway gates on Saturday alone.
It all added up to an exciting, over-the-top event that prompted Extreme Pro Stock’s Patrick telling National Guard ADRL President and CEO Kenny Nowling, “I’ve raced a long time and I’ve been in a lot of important races, but I don’t get ‘goosebumps’ much anymore. At this event I get them every time I come to the line.”
Packed grandstands and tight racing are now the hallmarks of all National Guard ADRL events, but it all started with Flowmaster Dragstock, the O’Fallon, Missouri-based series’ oldest and most prestigious race, scheduled this year for Sep. 11-12, at North Carolina’s Rockingham Dragway (shown).
