2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Schedule Released

August 27, 2009 by

Ennis, Texas (Aug. 27, 2009) – NHRA released the 2010 schedule Tuesday and Texas Motorplex fans can continue to make the Motorplex their racing destination in the fall of 2010. Less than a month before the 24th annual O’Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals comes for the 2009 stop (Sept. 24-27), plans for the 25th anniversary event are already in the works.

Waco resident and legendary drag racer Billy Meyer opened the Motorplex in 1986. Meyer had the benefit of a Funny Car racing career to help create the sport’s first super stadium that rewarded fans with some of the best seating in racing while equally benefiting the competitors with an all-concrete racing surface.

“The inaugural event was held the weekend of Sept. 25-28 so it was great to see us get the same date for our 25th anniversary in 2010,” Meyer said. “We’re excited to be able to celebrate 25 years of giving our fans the best racing at a great facility and to be able to do it on the same weekend as the first race makes it even more special.”

NHRA President Tom Compton said he was pleased to see the Texas Motorplex staying on the Countdown to 1 schedule. In 2009 the Motorplex is the second of the final six playoff races where the top 10 competitors in each professional category have a chance at earning the category championship. In 2010, the Motorplex will be the third of six Countdown playoff races.

“We are excited to return to the Texas Motorplex for the O’Reilly Super Start Batteries NHRA Fall Nationals in 2010,” Compton said. “This event will continue to be one of the six races in the NHRA playoffs, the Countdown to 1. One of the first super tracks on the NHRA circuit, the Motorplex definitely has a reputation for delivering some of the most spectacular moments in the history of the sport and will certainly be a critical stop in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series as our teams pursue important world championship points.”

Texas Motorplex General Manager Glenn Menard said keeping the fall date in 2010 was especially important because of the anniversary.

“The Motorplex will be celebrating our 25th anniversary in 2010 and it’s great that we can keep our fall tradition of hosting some of the quickest and fastest racing in September,” Menard said. “We have fans that have been to all of our NHRA events and it’s something they plan for. We love our position in the Countdown to 1 schedule and we can’t think of a better way to say goodbye to summer in Texas and usher in the fall than with some ultra quick side-by-side racing by some of the fiercest competitors in the sport.”

The big news of the schedule release is NHRA’s commitment to add a second NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event at the zMAX Dragway in Concord, N.C. in 2010. The second event is one of several exciting changes NHRA announced today as the world’s largest motorsports sanctioning organization revealed its 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule. The state-of-the-art dragstrip in the Charlotte, N.C. metro region will be the setting for two events: one in the spring and one in the fall, with an inaugural event added to the schedule on March 25-28, and the third annual NHRA Carolinas Nationals set for Sept. 16-19.
“Charlotte is quickly becoming a motorsports capital in the United States, rivaled only by Indianapolis, and the reception we have received from the fans and the number of major sponsors and teams that use the area as a base lead us to believe that it will provide the market foundation for those two races to evolve into among the two biggest events in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series,” said Tom Compton, president, NHRA. The inaugural race in September last year featured special guests, packed stands and significant corporate hospitality.

The 56th Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, Sept. 1-6 at O’Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis, will represent the first race in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to 1, NHRA’s championship playoffs. The Mac Tools U.S. Nationals, the world’s largest and most prestigious drag racing event, is scheduled for its traditional spot on the calendar — Labor Day weekend.

The 2010 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule remains a 24-race schedule. NHRA will kick off the season with a significant milestone event, the 50th Kragen O’Reilly NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona (Feb. 11-14). NHRA will pay tribute to its past throughout what figures to be one of the most memorable and nostalgic race weeks in the sport’s history as many of the legendary cars, drivers and magical moments will be honored. The hot rod culture runs deep in Southern California and its roots deepest at historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, where in February of 1961 NHRA founder Wally Parks hosted the first-ever running of the now-historic and iconic Kragen O’Reilly Winternationals.

As is tradition, the season concludes right back where it started in Pomona, Calif. with the 46th running of the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals (Nov. 11-14). The event has become “championship” weekend as most of the NHRA Full Throttle world championships in the four professional categories have been crowned at the event since the beginning of the playoff-style format in 2007.

The Motorplex will be in good company when it comes to milestone events in 2010. In the middle of May, the series stops at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga. to celebrate the 30th running of the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals (May 14-16), scheduled as a three-day event in 2010.

ESPN2 and ESPN2HD, a part of the ESPN network, the worldwide leader in sports, will once again provide exclusive television coverage, on a same-day basis, of all 24 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series events featuring action from qualifying rounds on Saturday and Sunday’s race.

Sportsman qualifying begins at 10 a.m. on Sept. 24. The first of four rounds of professional qualifying is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sept. 25, continuing at 4:45 p.m. that evening. Qualifying wraps up with sessions at 11:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 26. Final eliminations begin at 11 a.m. on Sept. 27.

Tickets for all four days of racing can be purchased by phone at 800-MOTORPLEX (800-688-6775); www.texasmotorplex.com; or through Ticketmaster.

Daniel Aydelotte takes home his first Wally at the 2009 JR ET Finals

August 24, 2009 by

August 23rd is a day that Texas Motorplex Jr Dragster racer, Daniel Aydelotte, will not soon forget. After a day of tough competition in the 14 year old class at the 2009 JR ET Finals, Daniel Aydelotte took home his first Wally. JR Dragster Racers from all over Division 4 meet in the DFW area to compete at the 2009 JR ET Finals this past weekend. Daniel’s age group featured 16 of the toughest 14 year olds in the country.

Daniel Aydelotte is no rookie to the sport. He began his racing career at the age of 10, and now races a 2008 RPC Gunslinger. He holds the 2007 Modified Champion and 2008 Top Eliminator Champion at Texas Motorplex. Daniel is currently ranked 4th in points at Texas Motorplex in the Top Eliminator Class.

This season Daniel and his crew upgraded to a JR Racecar Titan 3 with a Shockwave clutch. With engine modification in place and increased performance, the 150 inch wheelbase RPC JR Dragster launches hard and creates tire spin. For a driver tire spin means inconsistency, and in drag racing inconsistency usually means a loss.

The Aydelotte team towed up from Austin, Texas this past week for a Friday night testing session at a local track. Daniel struggled with several red lights during his Friday night practice session, but pulled it together for the event and cut decent lights during eliminations. With scorching temperatures over 100 degrees, Daniel battled issues with tire spin early in the day. With Daniel’s experience in the driver’s seat and guidance from Crew Chief, (Dad) Tom Aydelotte, the team eliminated tire spin by positioning the racecar either far left or far right depending on the lane and stayed out of the groove until after the launch. Daniel remained focused for all four rounds of eliminations and did his job to clinch the victory, earn the title of the 2009 JR ET Final 14 year old Class Winner, and take home his very first Wally.

Daniel enjoys what he does and takes pride in representing his team. Each week before the race, Daniel makes sure his racecar has a spotless shine. Last season Daniel painted his 08 RPC Gunslinger himself. Black is a very difficult color to paint, but Daniel used a deep gloss and very little orange peel to create a top of the line look. Although this was his first paint job, don’t be surprised to see more work from the young driver.

Dad and Crew Chief, Tom Aydelotte is very proud of his son and his accomplishments. “He is an awesome son and works very hard at this sport,” Aydelotte states. Texas Motorplex would like to Congratulate Daniel Aydelotte and his team for the recent 2009 JR ET Finals Win and wishes the Aydelotte Team a successful future in the sport of drag racing.
