The O’Reilly Bracket Racing Series on March 20 & 21 has been canceled due to a fast-moving arctic front that has blown into North Texas, bringing high winds and chilling temperatures. Texas Motorplex officials are working with its Racer Committee to find an alternate weekend to make up for this weekends race dates. The next scheduled bracket race is May 15-16. ENNIS, Texas (March 12, 2010) –Craig Garland clearly remembers the first time he held a prayer meeting at the Texas Motorplex. He may not remember the words he spoke, but he certainly remembers the sound….of his knees knocking together.
“All I remember is how much my knees were shaking because I was so nervous,” Garland said. “It was 2004 and we had about five people in the chapel that day. I can’t believe how much has changed over the years.”
Garland is now the South Central Regional Director for Team RFC. One thing that will not change with the new title is his presence at the Texas Motorplex throughout the facility’s 25th anniversary season. Garland and RFC chaplains will attend all major events, all bracket racing events and everything in between.
Now that the O’Reilly Bracket series has moved back to weekend racing, Garland will be holding chapel services on Sundays during the season again, starting March 21 at 8:30 a.m.
“We will be holding chapel service on race Sundays but it is our duty to be here from the time the first car goes down the track until the last one has finished the run,” Garland said. “I’ve moved into a full-time regional position, but I would not give up the Texas Motorplex for anything.”
Services will be held in the Champion’s Club for about 30-45 minutes. Texas Motorplex Competition Director Ashley Kellough said the services just add to the family-style weekend of events.
“We are a big family out here and I think this is one of the biggest bonuses of going back to Sunday racing,” Kellough said. “We can all race on Saturday, camp out and BBQ on Saturday night, go to the chapel service on Sunday and get right back to racing. Craig knows our racers and it’s a comfort to have him and the RFC staff on site, cheering for all the racers and participants.”
Going back to Sunday services at the Texas Motorplex means Garland will be on site more often during the 25th anniversary season of the facility.
“I’m so excited to be able to hold more chapel services at the Texas Motorplex,” Garland said. “We get to have them in the Champion’s Club and that means we are blessed to be able to hold services regardless of weather, with music, all together. Our involvement is kicking up a notch this year and we are thankful to be out here with racers and their families.”
The Texas Motorplex was the first all-concrete stadium-style drag racing facility ever constructed. Built in 1986, The Texas Motorplex has been the place of many drag racing milestones and world record performances. The Billy Meyer-owned facility hosts a number of racing and car show events between March and November each year and also features the Champions Club – an 11,000 square-foot facility – that serves fully catered events throughout the year.
Friday, March 19 we will be kicking off the year with our Fast Friday events. The Kickoff event will be especially fun as we are going to hold a racing clinic, will feature unique entertainment activities, and local law enforcement will be on hand ready to race against you. So come out and “Beat the HEAT!”…legally. There are some awesome discounts and we also will have a film crew from CBS Channel 1 on site filming a production that will air in more than 8,000 high schools across the United States and reach more than 9 million students.
