This Saturday, Texas Motorplex will be holding an Open Test & Tune for all racers and fans. Gates open at 10am and we will turn the 1st tire at 11:00am. We will be running all day till DARK. Come out and meet our staff, tune your car, and stop by our Concession Stands to try one of our NEW Jr. Slider Cheeseburgers for only $1.50. Gate Prices for Saturday are $15 to race, $10 to watch. All racers who attend the Test & Tune Saturday, are welcome to stay overnight for the Sunday kickoff of our 2009 O’Reilly Bracket Series!! Be sure you arrive before 5pm to attend our Test & Tune. Once our gates close we will not be allowing rigs to enter the facility until Sunday morning.
Sunday, March 1st kicks off our 2009 O’Reilly Bracket Series. JR. Gates will open at 8:00am with racing beginning at 8:45am. Our Bracket Gates will open at 11:30am with racing beginning at 12:30pm. NEW FOR THIS SEASON, for our Bracket Program we will be running Quick 16 in the 1/8th mile! Bring your car out this Sunday and race for a chance to win a FREE Reher-Morrison Racing Engine Building School entry for March 21st-22nd. Be sure to stop by our Onion Bomb stand and try out our NEW “Onion Bomb”. A colossal 20oz. Texas Sweet onion, marinated, cut, breaded, battered and deep fried to a crispy, golden brown and served with your choice of Ranch or Red Spicy Cajun Dipping Sauce. Also try our new Chicken Fried Steak On-A-Stick platter served on top of French Fries, and a Chicken Fried Steak Sandwich. Quench your thirst with a tall glass of our Made-from-scratch “fresh brewed” Raspberry or Peach iced tea.
Following our Racer Orientation last week, we would like to clarify a few details for our O’Reilly Bracket Series:
This season we will be running the Jr Program in the mornings and the Bracket Program in the afternoon. There will be two different gate times posted. We ask that you please respect the posted gate times in order for both Programs to benefit. Our Sunday, March 1st Gate Times will be 8am for the Jr Program, and 11:30am for the Bracket Program. Bye runs will be determined by drawing from the lanes. The 1st number drawn will be the lane. The 2nd number drawn will be the number of cars back in that lane. That car will be pulled to the side until the last set of cars is paired up to run. If there is a straggler to the lanes and the last pair is already pulled out of the lanes and is to the “Do Not Change Dial-In Past This Point” sign, located under the tower, the straggler will be disqualified and the Bye run will be paired up with the last run car. The Bye run will have lane choice, and the bye WILL NOT carry on to the next round. If there is an even number of cars and the Bye run has to be paired against another car, the Bye run will have lane choice, and the Bye WILL NOT carry on to the next round. Each round there will be another drawing for the Bye run. If a pair of cars proceeds past the “Do Not Change Dial-In Past This Point” sign and a car breaks, then the other car will receive a competition bye and will not be paired up with another car. In this event, there will be a competition bye, as well as the drawn Bye run.
NEW for the 2009 JR DRAGSTER PROGRAM at TEXAS MOTORPLEX
At each Jr event, our friends at Target Restoration will be awarding a 3ft trophy to the “BEST APPEARING CREW” for the Jr. Drag Teams. We will be taking a team photo in our NEW Winner Circle and posting this team on our website the following week! So Jr’s and crew, show your team colors and you can take home a 3ft trophy and bragging rights for Texas Motorplex “BEST APPEARING CREW”!!
Jr. Drivers will have a chance to participate in our “RUN FOR THE TROPHY” race each Jr Event. This event will be following our 2nd Time Trial Class for Jr.’s. This one lap race will cost $10 to enter. Each car will display a dial-in and the closest to their dial-in will receive a trophy!! 100% of the entries will go towards our Jr. Drag Racing League Western Conference Finals Team. Help support our team, and take a chance at taking home a trophy in our “RUN FOR THE TROPHY” Showdown!
SPECIAL FOR MARCH 1st O’Reilly Bracket KICK OFF RACE

BEGINNING April 11th for our BRACKET PROGRAM
We will have a “RUN FOR THE $” race at each Bracket event beginning at our #2 O’Reilly Bracket Race. This one lap race will cost $10 to enter. Each car will display a dial-in and the closest to their dial-in will receive 50% of entry fee purse. What a great way to support our racing program, and have a chance at some extra $$$.
Spaces still remain for the Golf Cart Showdown Competition at PINKS All Out on March 21. Is your golf cart “Texas Style” and captures the spirit of Pinks All Out? If so, you could be selected to participate in the 2009 Great Texas Golf Cart Shootout at PINKS All Out on March 21.
Send us photos of your cart, [front, side, and overhead], and you may be selected. You do NOT have to be racing at PINKS ALL OUT to participate.
Each cart selected will load in Friday, March 20, and be on display Saturday during PINKS ALL OUT. Then, racing in their own bracket during the exhibition period, near sundown on Saturday, they will be competing at sixty (60) feet for the title of Champion of the Great Texas Golf Cart Shootout for 2009.
Besides racing, prizes will be awarded for “People’s Choice” “Wildest Helmet” and “Most Creative”.
- Entry fee will merely be the crew admission price of $30 each for pilot and co-pilot.
- Golf Cart must have a factory motor/engine.
- All teams must have a pilot and copilot consisting of one male and one female.
- All participants must wear a helmet (Be creative! Prizes will be given)
- Drivers must be 16 years of age or older.
- Pilot and copilot must remain seated during the 60ft race.
- No alcohol can be consumed by participants before or during the event.

The silver anniversary of the Lucas Oil Slick Mist NHRA Nationals in Phoenix was highlighted by triumphant wins by Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Ron Capps (Funny Car), and Jeg Coughlin (Pro Stock).
Brown and Coughlin edged out respective multi-time Phoenix victors Brandon Bernstein and Kurt Johnson in the final round. Capps singled in the final when Mike Neff wasn’t able to stage.
Brown and Capps leave the second event of the 24-race NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series as the point leaders, while Coughlin is a close second behind Pomona winner Jason Line.
Brown started the season well in the Brian Corradi- and Mark Oswald-tuned Matco Tools dragster with a runner-up in Pomona, but the team left California with a thirst for that coveted Wally. He got the chance again when he met Bernstein in the final round. Brown, a former Pro Stock Motorcycle rider, took his third career Top Fuel win two races into his sophomore season by posting a 3.846 at 310.63 mph, while Bernstein smoked the hides and ran a 5.17.
“This just shows you how strong this team is,” said Brown, who leads the Top Fuel points standings for the first time in his career. “During the off-season, I looked at the guy upstairs and said, ‘What is all this adversity for?’ It was crazy. Then I found out that we were going to get Brian or Mark, and I had no doubt that we were going to be a good team. They took our car to another level.
“We were bummed in Pomona, because we had the car to beat going into the final before we had a mishap that slowed us down. The crew is getting more confident with every run. I think we’re going to keep getting stronger as the year goes on.”
The internal components of Brown’s dragster were used and abused every time he got back to the pits in eliminations, but they worked well for 1,000 feet at a time as he ran strong on Sunday. Brown’s motor expired early in a first-round defeat of rookie Del Cox Jr. He was locked in the 3.8-second zone after that by running 3.885 and 3.819 to survive competitive battles against Shawn Langdon and Tony Schumacher.
Bernstein followed his semifinal performance in Pomona by doing one better in getting to the final round at the event where he scored his first career win in 2003 and successfully defended the title in 2004. Bernstein was quietly effective in his fifth-best qualifying effort before crew chief Rob Flynn dialed in the Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster to a 3.890 and two 3.84s on race day while opponents Joe Hartley, Spencer Massey, and No. 1 qualifier Larry Dixon all had trouble. Bernstein’s victory over Dixon was key because the Alan Johnson Racing/Al-Anabi Racing dragster had been the class of the field up to that point, where it suffered a broken a throttle cable.
Capps and Neff had been the headliners in the Funny Car class from day one, but what was supposed to be an incredible final round ended in anticlimactic fashion when Neff was unable to get his Ford Drive One Mustang into reverse after his burnout. Capps would have been tough to beat, however, as he drove the Ed “the Ace” McCulloch-tuned NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger to his 27th career win with a roaring 4.048 at 306.81 mph.
“The start we’re having to the season is what NAPA signed up for,” said Capps, who had one previous win in four finals at this event. “We did so well with the Brut car, and we were disappointed with what we gave NAPA last year. This is more like it. I’m living a dream right now.
“Neff was having one of those weekends going where they looked like they couldn’t be beat. They had [crew chief] John Medlen in the hospital, and we’re all glad to hear that he’s okay. It was one of those stories that you almost hate to upset.”
Capps entered eliminations from the No. 1 qualifying position, the eighth of his career and his first since the 2005 season. Capps stayed consistent with elapsed times ranging from 4.079 to 4.118 while turning back challengers Jeff Arend, teammate Matt Hagan, and Del Worsham en route to the final round. Capps became the first Funny Car driver to open the season with consecutive wins since John Force in 1997 and is only the second driver to do so since Frank Hawley in 1983.
Neff’s misfortune in the final round was akin to the clock striking midnight during his Cinderella story. Neff took over the tuning chores as well as driving due to crew chief John Medlen recovering in Indianapolis after a stent was inserted around his heart. Neff had the most consistent car on the premises. He is now 0-4 in final rounds. The last time Medlen was unable to attend an event he was scheduled to work at, next-in-command Dickie Venables tuned Tony Pedregon to victory in Seattle in 2002.
Two of the greatest active drivers in Pro Stock today met in the final round when Coughlin took on Kurt Johnson. Coughlin held a 30-25 advantage over Johnson in previous competition, though the odds were in Johnson’s favor in final rounds to the tune of 7-0. Coughlin got a two-hundredths advantage when the pair of Chevy Cobalts took off and held on to win, 6.643 at 208.01 mph to 6.647 at 208.46.
“I didn’t realize Kurt had such a good record against us in the final, but I didn’t take him lightly because he’s always tough in the money round,” said Coughlin, who picked up the 42rd Pro Stock win of his career – he’s the fourth-winningest driver in class history — and his 55th overall. “We didn’t have the best car today by any stretch, but we just kept crawling our way through them and keeping our head up. To see that win light come on in the final round with the crowd we had today and the points and the whole bit, it feels fantastic.”
“The chips kind of fell the way they did for us to come home with the greatest achievement, and that’s a race win here. You always go into race day wanting a win, but we kind of struggled with it. It seems like in my career in Pro Stock that I’ve very rarely had the feeling of being up front and not wanting to screw up. We just went up each time and raced hard for it.”
The second round of Pro Stock featured upsets across the board as Johnson, Coughlin, Ron Krisher, and Greg Stanfield defeated respective favored opponents Allen Johnson, Line, Mike Edwards, and Greg Anderson. Coughlin was steady if not flashy as he moved Victor Cagnazzi’s Jegs.com Chevy Cobalt through the eliminations ladder. He opened with a 6.619 to beat Steve Spiess, upset Pomona winner Line in the second round with a 6.653, and ran a 6.651 in the semi’s to put Krisher’s good showing to an end.
The wave of second-round upsets made Kurt Johnson a favorite at a track where he had won on three previous occasions. The ACDelco driver overcame a holeshot from Larry Morgan in the first round with a 6.626, scored a holeshot win against Allen Johnson in round two, and cruised to a win in the semifinals with a 6.647 when opponent Stanfield broke after staging.
Lucas Oil Sportsman winners include past Lucas Oil season champions Dan Fletcher (Comp), Michael Iacono (Super Stock), and Mike Ferderer (Super Gas); two-time national event titlist Brad Burton (Stock); and Lucas Oil-sponsored driver Tom Bayer (Super Comp).

Texas Motorplex is excited to kick off the 2009 O’Reilly Bracket Series on March 1st. We have made several improvements to the Bracket Program and Jr Dragster Program, and we look forward to sharing these details with you at our 2009 Racer Orientation on Saturday, February 21st. **NOTE: There is a new system in place for the 2009 Division 4 Summit E.T. Bracket Finals teams to avoid “team shopping”. Each Division 4 track is required to send in point standings throughout the season. Racers must run for points at the track they represent at the Bracket Finals throughout the 2009 season.
