MOTORPLEX WILL BE ONE OF FINAL THREE RACES FOR
FUNNY CAR SUPERSTAR ALEXIS DEJORIA
ENNIS, Texas (October 9, 2017) – Kalitta Motorsports Funny Car pilot Alexis DeJoria announced today she will retire from NHRA competition following the conclusion of the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing season. This weekend’s 32nd annual AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals will now be one of DeJoria’s final three races and Texas fans won’t want to miss the chance to see this superstar in action.
“It’s one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make and I will miss everyone so much. My reasoning behind this decision is simple, it’s time for me to switch my focus towards my family,” said DeJoria, driver of the Tequila Patrón Toyota Camry.
“I’ve accomplished great things throughout my NHRA career. Working with Kalitta Motorsports and driving for Connie Kalitta has been an absolute honor, the man is a legend. He’s been the best boss I could have ever hoped for as a professional nitro Funny Car pilot. I can’t say enough about Jim O [Oberhofer], Nicky [Boninfante], Tommy [DeLago] and the entire organization I’ve had the pleasure of working with these last six plus years. I got to work with and learn from the best.”
DeJoria earned her Funny Car license at the Texas Motorplex and she made her professional debut at the AAA Texas FallNationals in 2011.
“Racing at the Motorplex is very special for me because that is where I got my Funny Car license with Del Worsham, I went to my very first final round there in Top Alcohol Funny Car and it is the track where I made my professional debut in Funny Car,” said DeJoria earlier this season. “It is my new home track for the last five years since I live in Austin. I just love racing there.”
Texas Motorplex owner and former Funny Car driver Billy Meyer was surprised by the announcement but also fully supportive of the decision.
“Alexis has made her mark on the NHRA. She has been one of the most competitive and popular drivers on the tour for many years,” said Texas Motorplex owner Billy Meyer. “We will hate to see her step away from racing but I completely support and understand her reasoning. As a former racer I know the time demands and putting your family first is never a mistake.”
DeJoria and the rest of the Funny Car category will make their first qualifying runs on Friday, October 13 at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Professional qualifying will continue on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. with Sunday eliminations starting at 11 a.m. For additional information about the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals visit www.texasmotorplex.com.
